WEYMOUTH will start their season in the top flight at Sherborne tomorrow (1pm), and skipper Kieron Womble is ready for his side’s opener.

The Seasiders surpassed all expectations to finish fourth in the Dorset Premier League last season, but the captain was keen not to put too much pressure on his charges this time around.

“I said staying up would be good last year and I got a bit of a blast for it," he told Echosport.

"There is literally no target this time, we are just going to try and finish as high as we can.

“We haven’t played Sherborne for a couple of years. It’s a big outfield and the pitch there has never been particularly quick, it’s a real grafter’s wicket with bat and ball.”

Batsman Michael Irrgang, who was voted the club’s midweek player of the year last term, is set to turn out for the Seasiders tomorrow.

Both Dom Webb and second XI player of the year for 2014 Luke Lovett are also likely to feature, and Womble is eager to see how the youngsters perform.

Speaking about the duo, he added: “They came on leaps and bounds last year and will be in the first team on Saturday.

“I am looking forward to giving them an opportunity and seeing what they can do.

“They have come through the youth set-up, which is looking really good at the moment, so I am very pleased from a club point of view."

Looking at the league this season, the Weymouth captain expects big guns Poole and Parley to once again compete for the crown, but did not rule out a surprise package being in the mix.

“I think Poole will be up there again and, as always, they will be very strong,” he added.

“Parley looked good towards the back end of the season but you never know, there is usually one team that does quite well and pushes up there.”

As revealed by Echosport last week, Matt Lawes will not feature this term after the all-rounder moved to Australia earlier this month. Dean Janaway is also likely to be unavailable for the opening part of the season.

With Dorchester back in the top tier, coupled with the addition of Martinstown this season, the Weymouth captain is looking forward to taking on their local rivals.

He added: “We travelled quite far within Dorset to a lot of the games last season, so it’s nice to have a few local teams in the league.

“It would be lovely to play them and beat them, obviously, but we really are just trying to win as many games as we can.”
