SIMON Browne will captain Weymouth for the first time tomorrow in the absence of Kieron Womble, as the Seasiders bid to put last weekend’s disastrous display against Sherborne behind them.

Reigning Dorset Premier League champions Poole visit Redlands (1pm) to take on a Weymouth outfit that features no fewer than six changes from the side that lost by nine wickets last Saturday.

Skipper Womble, Michael Irrgang, Alex Mortimore, Pete Gordon, Andy Anderson and Andy Jones are all missing.

Dave Trotter, Will McKay, Marco Nott, Chris Skinner, Hayden White and Laurie Whyte come in.

And it is the inconsistency in team selection that is a big problem for stand-in captain Browne.

“I’m probably the last person to comment on it as I’ve missed cricket through football commitments over the last 20 years,” he said. “But it seems to be a theme with us at the moment.

“It’s difficult to get a side out every week.

“We want to make playing for Weymouth worthwhile but it’s hard when people see us getting skittled out for 69, like we were against Sherborne.

“I was racking my brains to think of another time when a team I’ve been in has been bowled out for 69 and I couldn’t remember one.

“We don’t want a repeat of that.”

Weymouth’s summer couldn’t have got off to a worse start last Saturday when Irrgang was dismissed with the first ball of the match.

That set the tone for the rest of the Seasiders’ innings and the afternoon ended very abruptly as Sherborne knocked off the 70 runs they required with ease.

“This is the first time I’ve captained the Weymouth first XI,” added Browne. “I’ve always had football commitments in the past so I haven’t been considered for it.

“It’s nice to do it but it is just for one game before Kieron is back, and more importantly we have got to turn in a better performance than last weekend.

“It was one of those days where everything that could go wrong did.

“We lost a wicket with the first ball of our summer and it didn’t get any better after that.

“And it’s going to be tough against Poole as they are one of the best sides in the Premier League.”

Elsewhere, Weymouth Seconds, big winners over Wimborne & Colehill Thirds last weekend, go to Kingston Lacy tomorrow in County Division Three.
