DORCHESTER’S Dan Belt and Martinstown’s Ed Nichols will battle it out to become the leading run scorer on the final day of this year’s Dorset Premier League season tomorrow.

Both openers have enjoyed stellar campaign’s in the division, racking up 1,465 runs between them so far.

Belt has 745 of those, while Nichols is hot on his heels with 720.

Dorchester host Swanage at the Rec in their final league clash, while Martinstown make the trip to Wimborne, who are still vying for the league title (both 1pm).

Speaking ahead of the finale to the campaign, Villagers’ skipper Nichols told Echosport: “I was talking to Simon (Mitchem, Dorchester captain) about this and I just said that if he told Dan about it, Dan would get a hundred!

“I am not too worried about it, he is a better bat than I am but it’s been a really good season, to be honest.”

He added: “Wimborne is a lovely place to bat, that’s all I am worried about!

“I have made a couple of technical tweaks this season but it’s really just telling myself to play straight and bat time.

“It has given me a bit more confidence to take my time and just set things up.

“I don’t understand anyone who does not want to open the batting, it’s the best place to bat.”
