THE first week of the Read Woodruff Evening League saw the first round of the Knockout Cup.

Charlton Down, Puddletown, Abbotsbury, Casuals and Cosmos all proceeded to round two without serious alarm.

The outstanding batting performance came from Plush’s Andy Legg, who scored 100 not out, including five sixes, in only 15 overs in his side’s victory over Cattistock Seconds.

Also already on the fives sixes mark are St George’s Matt King in his unbeaten 77 and Dan Belt with 78 not out for Dewlish.

Remarkably these were both in the same match so Belt could feel himself unfortunate to be on the losing side.

Similarly unfortunate was Dan Pope whose 52 represented nearly three-quarters of the total in Winfrith’s loss to Charlton Down, the defeat being in due no small part to Sam Roles’ 76 for the winning side.

But the best performance of the week has to be that of Steven Chaldecott of Puddletown, whose bowling figures of five wickets for five runs in only 2.4 overs was far too much for ASM, whose total of 33 included four successive ducks.

One quirky sight was that of umpire Robin Potter wearing a Petr Cech-style face mask to protect some nerve damage.
