TOMORROW Chris Hicks’ men will bid to become the first team this season to defeat Mere Town in the Dorset Senior League (3pm).

Weymouth Sports travel to the unbeaten league leaders full of confidence following successive victories over Sturminster Marshall and Stourpaine, but they are under no illusions about the magnitude of the task ahead.

As well as sitting three points clear at the top of the table, Mere also possess a 100 per cent record on their own patch, where they have already disposed of reigning champions Portland United Reserves.

However, they did drop their first points of the campaign last weekend in a shock 2-2 draw at second-bottom Kingston Lacy.

Looking ahead to the clash, Hicks said: “This is one of those leagues where anything can happen on any given day, so there is no reason why we cannot go there tomorrow and get a result.

“Having won our last two, we are full of confidence and if we work as hard as we did against Stourpaine, we will stand every chance.

“We could also have one or two back including Scott Walker. He failed a late fitness test last week but is in line to return.”

Since their defeat at Mere, second-placed Portland Reserves have gone unbeaten in four.

Their assignment this weekend is a tough trip to Sturminster Newton United (3pm).

Blues’ boss Lee Clarke said: “It is another hard game for us. They like to play good football, as do we, so it should be a good spectacle.

“After three wins on the spin there is a lot of confidence around the squad at the moment, and it looks like this week we could have a few more to choose from too, which gives us a nice headache in terms of selection.”

Upwey & Broadwey will be out to make amends at Kingston Lacy (3pm) following last weekend’s 5-3 loss at the hands of Blandford United Reserves.

Manager Steve Reynolds threatened changes after the defeat and will be expecting a much-improved display this time around. He said: “Kingston Lacy away is never easy. They have a postage stamp of a pitch and after their draw against Mere they are going to be full of confidence.

“There is certainly no love lost between the two clubs and after taking just six points from our opening five games, I will be expecting a big performance from the lads.

“We just need to get a settled side together but at the moment it is proving very difficult.

“Phil Anderson has already had four different partners at the heart of the defence this season and that is far from ideal.

“We are also missing Ben Porteous at the moment with a hamstring injury, which is a big loss for us.”

Reynolds’ perennial promotion contenders currently sit fourth-bottom, 10 points off the top two.
