JASON Matthews was ecstatic to be part of what he described as a “massive reaction” from the Terras, as Weymouth convincingly defeated Cirencester 3-0 at the Corinium Stadium last night.

Weymouth dropped two points by conceding a late penalty against Redditch in their previous league outing, but the player-manager was thrilled with his side’s response in Gloucestershire, as well as being full of praise for midfielder Adam Kelly’s opening strike, which he believed was pivotal.

“It’s extremely pleasing to see such a massive reaction from the boys after we should have won on Saturday,” he told Echosport.

“I am absolutely delighted with the response, it was superb.

“It was an all-round team performance but Adam Kelly’s first goal was really good and I was very pleased when that went in.

“Cirencester came at us hard in the first 15 minutes but Kells scored two great goals to give us a foothold in the game.”

Matthews was also keen to highlight the togetherness in the Wey-mouth squad at present, and believes last night’s win can spur them on in their upcoming cup exploits.

He added: “I am all for togetherness in the team and I reiterated that at the end. Tim Sills failed a late fitness test before this game, so we are low on bodies at the moment but we will keep going and we are really pleased.

“We can have a little breather from the league now, the lads will be nursing a few knocks from this one but we will pick ourselves up and look forward to the FA Cup on Saturday.”
