PORTLAND United bid to secure second spot in the Dorset Premier League when they lock horns with Merley Cobham Sports at Grove Corner.

The Blues, who will complete a faultless season at home should they secure victory tomorrow (3pm), are likely to be without Ross Doidge for the encounter as he is suffering with a groin problem.

Nevertheless, manager Gary Bailey is looking for his side to end their campaign with a bang.

He told Echosport: “It’s a good game to end with and it keeps our season alive right until the last game.

“It’s a bit of a battle for second place and would be nice to get the win and complete our 100 per cent record at home, which will be quite an achievement.

“It keeps us on our toes and stops it becoming a complete dead rubber, which is what you want.

“We are used to competing right to the end of the season. Hopefully we can sign off with a good game of football between two good sides.”

Bailey, who saw the Blues beaten 1-0 at Merley earlier this season, added: “It was a tight game there and Merley are a good side.

They were top for a long part of the season before Hamworthy Rec reeled them in.

“We want to finish as high as we can and, now we can’t win it, second is the next best thing.”

Carl Mutch was last night set to undergo a fitness test on his back ahead of the contest.

Should the Blues get a draw or a win tomorrow they will receive a runners-up trophy and medals from the league.

Elsewhere, Weymouth Reserves will be looking to end their campaign with a home win against Westland Sports at the Bob Lucas Stadium (3pm).

Szymon Matuszewski will face his former team after switching between the two clubs earlier this season, and manager Jake Richmond believes the Polish playmaker has been one of his top performers this term.

“He (Matuszewski) will be playing against the team we signed him from, so it will be a good one for him,” Richmond said.

“He’s had about two average games for us but has been outstanding in the rest. In my mind, the club should be looking at him, I rate him that highly.

“Whether he is good enough to play for the first team, I don’t know, but we brought him in because we saw something in him.

“He is too good to be playing for us week in and week out.”

Shaun Annetts is also set to take charge of his first clash as manager of Bridport Reserves tomorrow when the Bees host Wareham Rangers at St Mary’s Field (3pm).
