MERLEY COBHAM SPORTS 1

WEYMOUTH RES 3

BRADLEY Asagba was left feeling content after his side comfortably dispatched Merley Cobham Sports to keep up the race for second spot in the Dorset Premier League.

Goals either side of half-time from Conor Jevon and a late strike from Sanchez Jansz-Baker secured a 3-1 win for the Terras.

Asagba felt his side controlled much of the game and was happy his team could take revenge over their opponents.

He said: “The defeat we had from earlier on in the season where we contrived to throw it all away still bugs me now.

“It was really good to go there and get three points because that was absolutely essential.”

Jevon opened the scoring for the Terras after 15 minutes in this must-win game.

His header from close range seemed to comfortably go over the line but the referee didn’t give the goal immediately.

And with the Weymouth players holding their breath, the man in the middle finally gave the opening score after a long consultation with his assistant.

Jevon doubled his tally just after the hour mark. After good play from Anthony Carlile down the right wing, the striker got on to the end of the midfielder’s cross with a diving header to add his second goal of the game.

Jansz-Baker put the game to bed with five minutes, with Sean Zima providing the assist down the right.

Cobham Sports did get a goal back in the 75th minute through Daniel Brennan, something that frustrated the Weymouth manager.

“Unfortunately, their goal came from a set play which we switched off from,” he explained.

“It was the biggest disappointment for us because they never looked like breaking us down.”

Alongside gaining the three points that keeps them level with second-placed Balti Sports, the Terras picked up a number of injuries that could hamper their run-in.

Goal scorer Jevon played with a knock and Oliver Clayton came off the bench only to play with a sore hamstring.

To complete the Terras’ injury woes, Ashley Ayley played nearly all of the game with a broken nose after a challenge for the ball in the fourth minute.

The manager added: “We’re walking wounded at the moment.

“I’m asking the players to put their bodies on the line and play through their various niggles.

“That is probably why our tempo dropped during the second half.

“But I can allow them that as they’ve got the three points and a 3-1 win.”

Weymouth are back in action tonight as they visit Bridport Reserves (7.45pm).

The manager will hope to see Craig Michie and Lewis Clarke return to the squad and he will bring in some under-18 players as cover for his injured men.
