BRIDPORT 0 SHERBORNE TOWN 3

TREVOR Senior condemned his players’ first-half efforts as Bridport crashed out of the FA Vase at St Mary’s Field.

The Bees failed to compete in the opening half of this second qualifying round tie and were unable to turn things around after the interval, much to their boss’ disappointment.

Senior said: “Sherborne deserved the victory there is no doubt about that. “We were poor in the first half. In fact, it was the worst I have seen us for a long time.

“We didn’t compete and at half-time there wasn’t a single positive we could take from it.

“After the break we then went out and gave a better account of ourselves but at 2-0 down we had left ourselves a mountain to climb and in the end they managed to get a third.

“All three goals were poor from our point of view and it was a disappointing way to go out of a national competition, which everyone should have been up for.”

Sam Jarman, Matt Day and Harry Montacute grabbed the goals for Sherborne. Analysing the game in more depth, Senior went on to add: “Chris Clarke collided with Sam Filkins on 15 minutes and was left with a nasty cut on his ear and concussion, so he had to go to hospital with Sam Buckler coming on in his place.

“Five minutes later, we then lost the ball on the left, it was crossed in behind us and Sam Buckler tried to get a tackle in, only to bring one of their lads down in the box.

“Luckily from our point of view he did not get carded because on another day we might have been down to 10 men but Sherborne still stuck away the penalty.

“They then went on to get a second. Once again it came from the right where we were not strong enough in the tackles and allowed them to put over a cross to the far post where a lad put it in under pressure.

"We hadn’t really created anything and to make matters worse we then lost Ryan Dovell with a groin problem.

“At the break I had a few words with the lads in the dressing room and in the second half I got a response. We went on to create a few chances with Ben Clarke, Jack Scovell, Chris Luke and Dan Peart all threatening but we did not take them.

“They then put a ball in behind us and when Ryan Hayter’s header back to Sam Filkins fell short one of their lads slid it home for 3-0.

“Sam Filkins then went on to tip another effort over the bar and in the end it was just a frustrating afternoon all round.”

The Bees return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Wells City in the Toolstation Western Premier Division (7.45pm).
