GROVE Corner is once again set to host their annual Boxing Day charity game, this time in memory of Gerry Gow.

The former Terras’ boss and Portland player died aged 64, having lost his battle against cancer in October.

As well as his time in Dorset, Gow’s illustrious career as a player included making more than 350 appearances for Bristol City and playing for Manchester City in the 1981 FA Cup final, as well as spells as Rotherham United and Burnley.

Weldmar Hospicecare will be the chosen charity for this year’s event and the festive fixture is set to kick off at 11am.

In memory of Gow, the sides going head to head will be Weymouth Old Boys and Portland Old Boys.

Nick Preston is set to manage the Portland XI, while Brendon King will manage the Weymouth team just a day before he steps into the dugout as Hamworthy United boss at the same venue, against Portland United in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division the next day.

“It’s something we like to do every year. We normally pick a charity but with the passing of Gerry Gow this was quite a fitting charity for someone who played for Portland,” said organiser Darren Whyton.

“Anybody can play if they want to really, I am trying to get as many people as possible, if we can.”
