VILLAGERS living near a busy Puriton road are celebrating after winning a ten-year battle to get a crossing installed.
Puriton district councillor Mark Healey says a community appeal to Somerset County Council for a zebra crossing on Hall Road has been successful.
The area had been identified in the Puriton Parish Plan last year as a potential 'danger hot spot' and many residents highlighted concerns over access and speeding along Hall Road.
But now Mark, who is also a county councillor, says SCC has agreed to fund a zebra crossing after he put the case forward.
He said: “It's great news. The playgroup based opposite where the crossing will go are delighted and young people will be safer.
“People's safety should always be top priority and SCC has demonstrated that by agreeing to fund the crossing.
“Busses currently have to stop on main road, which is dangerous because cars try and overtake and people getting off the bus have almost been run down. But the bus will now have a lay-by to go in according to the new plans.”
Mark says the community had been campaigning for a crossing there for around ten years and he has since been asked by West and East Huntspill to champion their cause for another one over the busy A38.
