WEYMOUTH’S Lily Young arrived back at her family home during the early hours this morning as world youth champion at the Naish One Stand Up Paddleboard World Championships in Germany.
The event saw 15 countries from around the world including America and Australia compete for world titles in the fastest growing watersport worldwide, which has been a common sight this summer on the waters of Weymouth and Portland.
The championships were decided with the combination of three races over a sprint distance, a mid-distance and a long distance, where Young paddled around 12km on the waters of Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria.
Competitors competed on identical equipment made by the Naish brand from Hawaii, who have led the development of one design of board to provide affordable and fun racing.
The All Saints School student qualified for her place at the event by competing in the Naish Ecover Blue Mile National Championships, which took place in Weymouth back in July.
Speaking on behalf of sponsors Naish UK, Alex Tobutt told Echosport: “Lily was part of the UK team that we took out there as part of the World Championships.
“People came from everywhere and all used the same board, and Lily won the junior girls’ section.
“The girls did three disciplines and she was the first girl in every single one by a good margin, and in the long distance race she beat all the boys apart from one.”
The UK team also returned with a silver medal in the men’s sprint discipline, and a silver and bronze in the men’s mid distance race.
