STEVE Coward believes that Chickerell United’s mentality could be enough to get them over the line in the Dorset Senior League title race this term.

The Chickens travel to Dorchester Sports tomorrow (3pm) knowing that maximum points from their final three league outings is necessary for them to have any chance of lifting the crown.

And Coward believes his side is more than capable, and have the nous at the business end of the season, despite needing Holt United to slip up with a game in hand.

He told Echosport: “Every game we play now the lads take it as a cup final. It is win at all costs for us and the lads are mature in that sense.

“They are all mentally capable and know what’s what.

“At the end of the day we just have to win and Holt are starting to close the gap on goal difference as well.

“I think we are fairly confident that we can seal points but we shouldn’t be over confident. It’s a team game and you have to do it together, if you don’t you could slip up.

“You see it at all levels where the teams near the top can slip up against those near the bottom.”

Three key additions Coward is set to have back in his ranks against ninth-placed Sports are Steve Welch, Dan Welch, and Warren White. “They are massive players,” the Stalls boss added.

“They could all be playing at a higher level and I believe our team could be playing a higher level than they are.

“Luckily for us all the lads are enjoying it at the club and that’s what it’s all about.

“They are all playing for a cup final spot as well and I have about 15 or 16 lads who are all capable of starting that cup final, which gives me a bid of a headache.”

A win for the Chickens would see them close the gap on leaders Balti House to six points.
