THE finals of the Dorchester Club Handicap tournaments have been played.

The racketball showpiece was between Lyn Stockham and Callum Watts.

Despite giving over 40 years away to his opponent, Stockham gave a sterling performance against the teenager.

However, Watts’ agility, fitness and power finally proved too much and he took the title by three games to one.

Watts then changed racquets and played Shaun Dunn in the squash final.

It was definitely the 17-yearold’s night as he triumphed in a fast and furious match.

There were two plate finals for first-round losers.

Annabel Whalley took on Paul Morris in the squash plate and justified their handicaps by registering a close 3-2 games win.

An even closer match took place for the racketball plate when John Pengelly and Keith Loader fought out a fitness-sapping battle and Pengelly won the deciding final game of five 15-13.

As well as the tournament, four squash and racketball matches took place.

First up was a ‘local derby’ match between the squash third and fourth teams.

Finding themselves in the same county league this season gave extra spice to the fixture, as the fourth team came out victors 3-2.

Dorchester’s second racketball team travelled to play Springfield Country Club’s first team.

Darren Baker, Callum Watts and Andy Gilks all won their games convincingly and Callum’s father, Simon, saved the home side from a whitewash by dropping two games, but by winning three games to two this gave the team another very welcome 17 points.

The third match was between the county town’s squash second team against Canford II.

Marcus Courtaux, playing at number one for Dorchester, had a tough match against Anthony Jennings, but ran out a well deserved 3-1 winner. Callum Watts showed his opponent little mercy in winning 3-0 for the loss of just three points.

Number three Ramus Lauridsen, after losing the first game against his Canford opponent, won the next three games.

Adam Lawrence and captain Lee Loader, at four and five respectively, won comfortably 3-0 which gave the team a fine 20-2 victory.

The last league match of the week saw the racketball first team take on Haymoor.

Mike Elliott was first up against the experienced Keith Chambers.

However, he won the first game, but Chambers took control and won the next three games.

Ed Elliot-Square, playing at number three, went 2-1 down but battled back to win the next two games to seal a fine 3-2 victory.

Craig Robinson was in superb form for Dorchester and convincingly won 3-0 against Adrian Language.

This meant that the number one match between Stewart Dipple and Haymoor’s Neil Chambers would decide the match.

Chambers won the first two games before Stewart came back to win the third but then lost the fourth to lose a superb match 3-1.

The match was tied at two matches all and at eight games all. A points countback was necessary and Dorchester came out the winners.
