THE Weymouth & District League continued after the festive break with a top-of-the-table clash in Division One.

Ray Cody inflicted Jamie Blair’s first defeat of the season in helping Park District to a tight 22-17 victory over Budmouth B.

This week, Park beat Budmouth C to move into second position and within striking distance of Budmouth B who overcame Red Triangle 28-7.

The final score does not reflect the closeness of the match.

Many of the legs went to deuce and the youngsters were pushed all the way by the Red Triangle veterans.

Tim Scott (4), making his debut in Division One, showed that he is going to be a welcome addition to the league and a force to be reckoned with as he took a leg off Jamie Blair (9) and beat Ethan Gear (7) in a really close match.

YMCA beat Preston B 22-16 to maintain fourth place. Brian Hansford (7) had a good night for the Dorchester team including a massive 19-17 second set against Peter Stopforth (4).

All Saints continue to head up Division Two after their close 19-17 win over Shipton Gorge C.

Both Ben Hannigan and Luke Dadds hit maximums to help the school side to an unassailable lead before losing the closing doubles.

Their 23-16 win over Wyke D leaves Pilgrims A in third place with Tim Scott (9) top scoring for them.

Tony Dobbs (7) was Wyke’s top scorer on the night.

Springfield C had a fairly comfortable evening against Colliton C in winning 25-13.

Steve Rook secured the full nine points for Springfield with Mark Whittingham (6) securing two good wins for Colliton including a great recovery from two sets down against Pete Anderson (8).

Division Three is still topped by STEPS and they consolidated that position with a convincing 24-8 win over Wyke C.

Roy Sharp (8) scored all of Wyke’s points with Joshua Why (9) inflicting his only loss of the evening on his way to a full nine points for the victors.

Springfield D sit in second place after a 27-12 win over the girls of Budmouth E.

An enjoyable match in which it was definitely a youth versus experience evening.

The wily league president, Mike Richardson (9), had a bit too much know-how for Jaimee Browne in the opener although the scores were very close and then Ella Stanton (5) beat Mike Wood (7) 3-1 to level the scores.

Richard Wood beat Sophie Storey (1) on his way to a maximum but he found Stanton a tough opponent before winning in four close legs. Although the girls came close in several legs they had to wait until the doubles to register their second win of the evening, coming from 2-1 down to take the last two legs.

The battle of the schools saw Wey Valley beat Budmouth D 22-17, though Budmouth remain third in the division.

Jed Brackenridge (8) and Ben Howe (8) got Budmouth off to a great start but Jules Holloway (9) was ably backed up by Thomas Wheeler (5) and Ethan Bingham (5) to claw Wey Valley back into the match.

Fourth and fifth fought out the last match of the week and it saw fourth come out on top with STEPS M beating Wey Valley Tennis Centre 25-14.

STEPS stamped their authority on the evening in winning the opening five ties, though two of them were in five sets. Jess Moggeridge (4) and Nathan Calton (7) both secured wins in the second half for Wey Valley to show their potential.
