A FULL house at the Weymouth Pavilion was treated to a boxing programme of 12 bouts between local boxers and contestants as far away as Thames Valley and Berensfield in Oxfordshire.

There was late difficulty with the organising the bouts as unfortunately Weymouth’s Reba Stone fell ill and Devonport pulled out three boxers on Friday afternoon.

The matchmaker Mark Ford with the help of Sturminster and Ferndown clubs managed to put together a full programme at the last minute.

The evening began with a couple of skills bouts for 10 year olds just starting out on their boxing careers.

Starring in these bouts was Ruby White, a ten year old from Sturminster, also known as the pocket rocket.

The skills bouts were followed by some good schoolboy and junior contests, including a good female bout between Naomi Avery of Sturminster and Danielle Blake of Berensfield which saw the latter win on points after a hard fought contest.

After the interval Weymouth’s Olly Carr entered the ring against Spike Armstrong of Bridport.

Carr started slowly, and with the second round even Carr had to box well but it was Armstrong who came on strong and took the bout with a well fought victory.

In the first senior bout George Otton of Weymouth was up against Daniel Hawkins of the Thames Valley Club which ended when the referee stopped the bout in the third round in favour of Hawkins.

The highlight of the evening was the final bout of the evening between Weymouth’s Anthony Spence and Mickel Yanni from the Jubilee boxing club of Slough.

The bout started with a good hard hitting first round and Spence came on strong in the second as both boxers got the audience involved with vocal support.

After a hard fought match over the three rounds but it was Yanni who took the points decision.

Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club would like to thank all the patrons for a wonderful evening, with special thanks to the Pavilion for their efficiency, Loose Moose Catering for the meals and Event Security South for providing security.

Proceeds from the event are going towards efforts to fund a new gym for the Weymouth Amateur Boxing Club.
