Upwey & Broadwey manager Steve Reynolds has warned his players they must start being more ruthless in front of goal if they are to stand any chance of winning silverware this season.

Sean Zima netted twice in the opening 15 minutes against basement boys Swanage Town & Herston Reserves but the hosts then failed to press home their advantage and almost paid the price after Phil Anderson’s trip allowed the Purbeck side a route back into the game from the spot.

Although the Weymouth outfit managed to hold out for the remaining half-hour of the contest to move up to fifth in the Dorset Senior League, Reynolds was not impressed with his troops, accusing them of lacking self-belief.

The unsatisfied boss said: “We went 2-0 up after 15 minutes and were creating lots of chances but we failed to add to that lead and in the end we made very hard work of it.

“We should have been four or five up at half-time and then in the second half we were just not at the races at all.

“The players then started to moan at each other and in the end Swanage got one back on the hour through a penalty after Phil was judged to have tripped one of their lads in the box.

“To be honest, they did not create much all game but they did give us problems at times with the ball over the top, which we are just not coping with at the moment.

“They got into some good positions that way but lacked that bit of quality in the final third to turn those openings into chances. Against a better side, we would have been punished.”

Reynolds went on to add: “We are playing in fits and starts at the moment, and if we have got any aspirations of winning anything, we will need to be a lot more consistent.

“We must also cut out all the bickering because once that starts we just go from bad to worse.

“We have a cracking squad with a lot of quality but we need to start displaying some self-belief, which is strangely lacking at the moment.”

Zima opened the scoring from the spot, following a blatant handball, and then doubled his tally with a rebound after Richard Frost’s strike had come back off a post.

Reynolds said: “No one delivers a ball into the box better than Sean and he took his two goals superbly.

“We then failed to take several chances before Ben Coltart came on in the second half and missed two gilt-edged opportunities, which had he taken would have definitely settled us down.

“From there, a bit of frustration set in and on another day that could cost us. We must start killing games off better and being more ruthless in front of goal.”
