DORCHESTER TOWN 0

BANBURY UNITED 3

A BRACE from Felipe Barcelos and a Ricky Johnson penalty consigned Dorchester Town to a dismal 3-0 defeat at the hands of Banbury United in the FA Cup first qualifying round.

Johnson slotted the spot-kick home in the first half after Shane Murphy had brought down Liam Howards.

Barcelos then scored two goals within minutes of each other to send the Puritans through in the cup.

The Magpies welcomed back Mario Mateus into the side in the place of David Jerrard, but the rest of the side were unchanged from the 2-1 defeat to Weymouth on Monday.

The game at the Avenue was played in some horrific conditions and the driving rain did affect the game.

Both sides struggled to get to grips with the slick pitch and it was the visitors who had the first chance.

Jack Self found himself in behind the Dorchester defence, and with just Murphy to beat, he could only hit the outside of a post.

After the early scare, the home side started to come into the game – Tony Lee curled an effort straight at Jack Harding.

Both sides put some nice passing football together, but they struggled to create chances.

But, in the 35th minute, Howards earnt the visitors a penalty.

Felipe Barcelos slipped the striker in behind the defence and he just beat Murphy to the ball, nicking it past him and accepting the slide tackle from the keeper.

Johnson stepped up and hammered the spot kick straight down the middle to take the lead for the visitors.

Banbury, with the goal, had their tails up and Callum White could have doubled their lead. A lovely passing move found the full-back, and with Murphy committed, he could only fire over the bar.

The hosts ended the half stronger and Walker had a golden chance to level the game.

Wood found Smeeton who hacked a shot towards goal with his weaker right foot. It didn’t look to be heading on target, but Walker reacted well, heading it towards goal only to see Harding pull off a good save.

David Jerrard came on after the interval for Dory Yates as the Magpies looked for a way back into the game.

Walker had a glorious chance just after the break but his half-volley from close range fizzed wide of the mark.

But their task got harder as Barcelos added Banbury’s second in the 57th minute. Substitute Mark Janes got in behind the defence and he selflessly squared it to Barcelos, who crept his shot underneath the onrushing Murphy.

Barcelos then added his second of the game and the Puritans’ third minutes later. This time he rifled a vicious shot home from 25 yards.

With a comfortable buffer, the away side sat back and soaked up the pressure.

The Magpies, with Nick Swann making the play, kept plugging away, looking for a way through the defence.

But the Puritans stood firm and saw the game out to progress through to the second qualifying round, leaving the Magpies trying to forget this dismal display.
