AFTER his first pre-season wheeling and dealing in the transfer market as a manager, Mark Jermyn says he was surprised by “how much finance drives players”.

The Dorchester boss is happy with the squad he has assembled for the new season, one he hopes will continue the good form shown since his Avenue return.

Jermyn managed to retain a number of players on fresh deals earlier this summer while also bringing in the likes of Neil Martin and Charlie Davis.

When asked about the last few months, he said: “I’ve been very surprised as to how much finance drives players, I’ve never known it before.

“People are happy to sit on benches as long as they get paid and to me that’s not what football is about.

“First and foremost, it’s about trying to get on the pitch, and once you are on the pitch you can show you are worth the money.

“Not by going to certain teams because they’ve got a good squad of players and you want to be part of a promotion team, that’s not what football is about.

Football is about getting on the pitch, proving your worth, and if you’re any good somebody will come and get you.

“And dare I say it, I welcome it. Should our players go on to better things then great, it proves we were right in bringing them in."
