NOT picking up three points against Bedworth United on Saturday would have been a “disaster” for Dorchester Town, according to boss Mark Jermyn.

The Magpies threw away a two-goal half-time lead early in the second period at the Avenue before hitting back to secure an eighth Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division success this term.

But while they maintained their quest for promotion, Jermyn knows his side should have closed out the game after goals from Bradley Tarbuck and Ben Watson appeared to put them in command.

“I said to the players before the game that it was an opportunity to get three more points and stay with the teams that are high up in the league,” Jermyn told Echosport.

“To lose would have been a disaster, to draw would have been a disaster, so we did okay to get the three points after that second half.

“We didn’t do well, we did okay. We salvaged the points out of a game that should have been dead and buried.”

Assessing the match, he continued: “Unfortunately, the groundsman has been unable to get on the pitch this week due to the weather and I think it certainly showed with the length of the grass.

“You could see that in the first 10-15 minutes of the game when some of the passing wasn’t acceptable.

“It was unlike us and I would probably put that down to the grass on the pitch being so long.

“However, we got a foothold in the game at 1-0 up and then obviously got the second.

“We were coasting at that point and were comfortable going in at half-time, but we came out in the second half and didn’t start at all.

“You have to respect the fact that Bedworth came out in the second half and gave a really spirited performance, and for that I take my hat off to them.

“But I don’t think by any means they broke us down through great play, they broke us down by our lapses in concentration, and we really didn’t get going in the second half.”

Justin Marsden and Lewis Chester made it 2-2 before the hour mark but after Jermyn had brought himself on for skipper Jake Smeeton, Charlie Davis slotted home a 70th-minute penalty to give Dorchester back-to-back league wins.
