DORCHESTER Town boss Mark Jermyn revealed that Jake Smeeton is likely to miss the rest of the campaign after picking up a nasty cut to the ankle in the 3-2 win at Bideford.

The county town skipper was carried off after sustaining the injury with around 20 minutes to go at the Sports Ground – the Magpies also had to play the rest of the contest with 10 men having already made all three of their substitutions.

Jermyn, who insisted there was a lot of blood from the injury, told Echosport: “I think he got somebody’s blade or stud that went straight across him.

“He has split the crease on his ankle by the shin and his foot.

“It has split right across so I am very doubtful that Jake will see any games before the end of the season now. He has had to have it stitched and glued.

“It’s a big loss for us because Jake, in my opinion, has been the standout player of the season for us this year.

“Jake is one of the players who has enjoyed being at Dorchester and I think that will continue for many seasons to come.”

A Charlie Davis brace topped up with a goal from Nathan Walker gave the Avenue outfit three points in Devon and ended a run of three league defeats.

On the game itself the Magpies’ boss added: “I think the boys dug deep and got what they deserved.”
