DORCHESTER Town midfielder Luke Winsper believes the Magpies should have beaten Merthyr Town in their Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division clash at the Avenue Stadium.

Merthyr star Ian Traylor was responsible for both Martyrs’ goals in their 2-1 win, before Winsper replied with a rasping shot into the top corner with under 30 minutes to play.

Speaking to Echosport after the match, Winsper felt three points were attainable had the Magpies not given two “sloppy” goals away.

He said: “First half I don’t think we got going at all, we were too slow and every second ball we were nowhere near.

“I think the first half it was more me and Bowlesy (Gary Bowles) playing as a two and one in front. Second half, Bowlesy came off and I played as a one and two in front and we won every second ball.

“We had more freedom, played better football and as soon as the goal went in it gave us a massive lift. They blocked a lot of shots and we gave two sloppy goals away – we should be winning that. Everyone knows that. We’re all disappointed.”

Winsper added: “I can’t believe how many blocks they made. We hit the bar twice and if we didn’t give away two sloppy goals we win the game and we’d be more comfortable.

“I think we absolutely battered them. They had one thing, they hoofed it forward and they were in every time.

“I think the defence, we should have been a little bit deeper. We were trying to push forward for a second. We’re usually good at home but we’ve just got to go on to next week.”

Commenting on his own 25-yard strike, his first this season, Winsper admitted it was the product of scoring similar efforts in training.

He said: “I’ve hit a few and they’ve gone over the stand a few times. But like the lads say, I do it in training most weeks.

“Bill (Billy Lowes) said to me before the game: ‘If you score I want you to come and celebrate as soon as you score’. I said ‘I’ll score one goal this season and it’ll be a screamer’ and literally it was. It’s nice to score, it’s just a shame about the result.”
