DORCHESTER Town manager Steve Thompson was delighted as he saw his side take a 1-0 victory at home against play-off hopefuls Royston Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

A well taken goal in the 79th minute from Aaron Rodriguez saw the Magpies end a four-game winless run in the league.

Thompson said: “It was a very hard fought victory but in the end we had four or five chances to get the second goal and seal it in the last 15 minutes.”

Dorchester started brightly in the first half with chances from Antonio Diaz and Archie Collins both engineering opportunities for the Magpies.

The Magpies subsequently faded latter on in the half as the Crows asserted their dominance.

Thompson said: “I must say I thought that in the first half they were the better team, even though they did not create loads of chances they were the better team. Most of the play was in our half but in the second half we came out very strongly and it is a great win.”

Thompson was pleased with the efforts from his players as they worked hard and earned the victory.

He said: “Everyone has worked really hard – the players obviously, the substitutes that came on, even the substitutes that did not come on from the side, all of the management we have all had to really work to gain that victory.”

Thompson said that by the end of the game he felt his side had been on top.

Thompson said: “They had a few chances during the game but by the end of the game we were the team that had had most of the chances.

“In the first half it was tough going and we were battling against it and most of the play was down in our half and we had to defend very well which we did on quite a few occasions and on the occasions we did not they missed a couple of chances.”

When asked if he was worried he might come to rue the missed chances Thompson said: “You do when you do not get the second goal in that last 20 minutes you think it only takes one second for something to happen at the other end.

“You worry it is going to end up 1-1 when really you should have put the game to bed.

“I thought everyone worked extremely hard today.”

When asked if it made the performance satisfying given the recent departures and arrivals at the Avenue Thompson said: “Antonio and Aaron have both been here before this season, they have both got very good quality and I am glad to have them back.

“Aaron is such a good player on the ball and he is a terrific player if we can really get him going on the ball.”

Thompson also admitted his side will be buoyed by the win ahead of their match away at Kettering in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division on Tuesday (7.45pm).
