DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson insists the Magpies’ squad is in “good spirits” ahead of a season-ending trip to face Biggleswade Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division tomorrow (3pm).

Thompson’s men have picked up eight points from six games in April, including breaking a long sequence without an away league win by beating St Ives 2-1.

During that time, the Magpies have also collected creditable 0-0 draws at Tiverton Town and Hitchin Town, both of whom are placed well inside the top half.

And now Thompson is aiming to finish the season in perfect style by completing the double against the Waders, who were beaten 2-1 at the Avenue Stadium in November.

He told Echosport: “To finish with two long away trips is not ideal but the boys are in good spirits.

“We’re looking forward to completing the season and it would be nice to end with a win and get up to 53 points, which looked a long way when I joined.”

Thompson has tinkered with his side since their safety from relegation was confirmed and has often called for the club’s players to step up.

The former Yeovil manager was therefore delighted when Ross Carmichael and Dom Panesar-Dower delivered good displays in the Hitchin stalemate on Monday.

He said: “I’m pleased that we’re defending better as a team, but performances are important, more than results.

“Two players have come into the team, Ross and Dom, and performed very well.”

Thompson has also been casting his eye over the Magpies’ reserves, challenging Sol Ayunga and Jason Brookes to elevate their displays – Ayunga doing just that by scoring a direct free-kick against Salisbury Development on Monday night.

Thompson said: “I think Sol’s got to produce performances. He’s played a few reserve games and he’s got to stand out more to be able to get in the first team.

“Brookesy as well. I think they’re the only two because we’re pretty short on numbers. About two or three weeks ago Ollie (Griggs) and Dom played in a reserve game and both did pretty well in that game.

“They’ve both featured in the last two or three games, so we don’t ignore reserve team appearances and what they’re doing.”

Luke Winsper remains a doubt with a niggling ankle injury, and Callum Rose will also be assessed with knee tendonitis.
