A 12-YEAR-OLD boy who has set himself the epic cycle challenge of reaching all 10 Olympic venues will arrive in Weymouth and Portland this week.

Jake Phipps, from Worcester-shire, is set to reach the borough on Friday evening and will visit the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on Saturday.

He hopes to raise £20,012 for two charities which support vulnerable children – Action for Children and Access Sport.

On Sunday, Jake will set off on his ambitious journey again and pedal to the Olympic venues in Windsor, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent and London, completing the 2,012km challenge in a total of just five weeks.

The plucky youngster, who began his challenge at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on June 7, and has since visited St James’ Park, Newcastle, Old Trafford, Man-chester, the City of Coventry Stadium and Cardiff’s Millenni-um Stadium, is no stranger to cycling challenges.

In 2010, he cycled 660 miles from Land’s End to Dover and raised £1,500 for Action for Children after being inspired to take up cycling after the Beijing Olympic Games.

His forthcoming challenge is double the distance.

He said: “I’m quite nervous about some of the big hills on the ride but I really want to raise lots of money for Action for Children and Access Sport because they do great things for children who have difficult lives.” Jake knows just what a difference being involved in sport can make.

Mum Nic Phipps who will also be cycling with family friend Philip Woods, said: “Jake has is a lot more confident after getting involved with cycling and joining a club. He’s now involved in lots of other sports and it gives him a real sense of purpose.

“We’re really looking forward to meeting people along the way.”

Elaine Robinson, Action for Children fundraiser, said: “Jake’s a fantastic lad and we’re so grateful he has chosen to support us.

“Everyone at Action for Children is so excited about this challenge. We’ll all be rooting for them.”

David Boorman, fundraising director at Access Sport, said: “Jake is an inspiration to everyone for taking on such an epic challenge.

“The 2,012 km he will cycle this summer shows just what the spirit of this year’s games are all about, and Access Sport are extremely proud and grateful he has chosen to raise money for us.”
