Fillys Cup Quarter-finals

DORCHESTER had three representatives in this year’s County Ladies’ Filly Cup quarter-finals and two qualified for the semi-final stage.

Hazel Newboult gained her place with a good win over fellow club member Sue Lofthouse, but Di Lunn who travelled to Bourne-mouth lost out to Jo Dearlove after a marathon, which lasted two hours and involved 26 ends.

The most notable win was gained by 15-year-old Louise Woodrow, the promising new talent from the county town club, who took up the sport just two years ago.

An away encounter against Dolphin’s Caroline Wilson began in fine style for the teenager who immediately found the pace of the carpet and took an early 7-0 lead.

Displaying an assured confidence, she increased the lead to 16-5 before hitting stormy waters, dropping 11 shots over just three ends.

Just when it looked as if her limited experience would let her down she regained her composure to take all of the next five ends to win 21-16.

In the semi-finals, both Dorchester winning players have the benefit of home games Newboult will play Dearlove, while Woodrow plays Iris Rumble of Dolphin who has been the losing finalist on two previous occasions.

It could be a hat-trick of Filly wins for Dorchester as Fran Dyer took the title in 2012 and Jan Meyers was the winner last season.

DORCHESTER 45 MOONFLEET 29

DORCHESTER – the current holders of the county ladies’ double rink Knockout Cup – are on course to retain the trophy following their semi-final win against Moonfleet.

The Fleet quartet of Margaret Hooper, Madge Churches, Thel-ma Nash and Margaret Crawford travelled to the county town venue to take on Dorchester skip Freda Yates, supported by Julie Corbin, Carol Baker and Isabelle Addison, and gave a solid performance with a creditable 23-18 win.

This was achieved from a 7-0 down situation via a 11-8 lead and falling behind again at 12-11.

Yates and co were adrift at 20-13, although a count of five on the penultimate end tempered the defeat.

The Moonfleet home four, skipped by Kath Desmond scored an opening two shots on the first end against visitors Ronnie Stevenson Sue Maggs, Barbara Follis and Sheila Baker.

Opposing skips Desmond and Baker – team-mates in the successful county Atherley side – were going head to head this time, and it was Baker and co who then blitzed the next nine ends to amass a 13-2 lead.

Desmond picked up a couple of twos and a single on the way to the finish but Dorchester were not to be denied and posted an unusually wide margin score – 27-7 – against their local rivals.

Baker’s win more than compensated for the home fours reverse, and for Dorchester a second final appearance on the bounce beckons.
