ADAM Fraser capped an excellent year with a hat-trick of titles at Weymouth Tennis Club’s annual Club Championships.

Fraser started slowly in his quest to win three finals.

His opponent in the men’s singles, Asa Cardiff, played a near perfect first set of tennis in their final, and then raced into a 3-1 lead in the second.

However, Cardiff suffered a back injury after a fall and, following a short break, the momentum swung back in Fraser’s favour as he levelled the match.

Fraser ended up winning the decisive tie-break to claim the title.

Unfortunately, Cardiff couldn’t continue so that meant Fraser, along with Mark Henman, took the men’s doubles title.

They had looked odds-on to win it after reaching the final without dropping a set.

Fraser also sealed the mixed doubles crown with Glenda Fraser after they overcame Jacqui Mitchell and Jon Braithwaite 6-2, 6-1.

The ladies’ doubles final was a close-run affair, again going to a deciding tie-break.

In the end, the twin forehand attack of Glenda Fraser and Jenny Harris prevailed over the tenacious Gill Corben and Mitchell.

There was also some brilliant tennis in the junior events which entertained the watching crowd.

First up in the eight-and-under mini-tennis event, Clara Halcrow held her nerve in some very close matches to claim her first trophy.

There was fierce competition for the nine-and-under trophy, with several lengthy matches testing the players’ stamina.

The final saw George Taylor beat team-mate Hedley Richardson in a thrilling three-setter.

Last year’s nine-and-under finalists both enjoyed success again this year.

Ben Kinsey, runner-up in 2013, went one better to win the 10-and-under age group, and Pascal Maclean-Wood stepped up two age groups to take the 12-and-under title in an absorbing match against Matthew Smith.

In the showcase junior finals, brother and sister Millen and Sophia Hurrion both triumphed.

Sophia overcame a determined Georgina Mason in three sets and Millen was made to work hard by Thomas Powell, the Dorset number one at 14-and-under level, before eventually triumphing after both players produced some exhilarating points.

Thanks go to Christine Penny for her organisation of the competitions and also to Julien Lawes and his assistants from J Lawes Tennis who umpired on the day and sponsored the balls.
