WEYMOUTH 6 PORTSMOUTH UNIVERSITY 1

WEYMOUTH followed their demolition of Blandford & Sturminster with a 6-1 thrashing of the University of Portsmouth.

The hosts stamped their authority on the game from the outset and drew first blood 10 minutes in when skipper Simon Harvey swept in a rebound after forward Patrick May had seen his effort from a penalty corner saved.

Shortly after, Weymouth had a goal disallowed when an earlier shot was deemed to have been off target and therefore dangerous, but it wasn’t long until they extended their lead further with two goals from Luke Drewitt.

Drewitt’s first came from a penalty corner routine that continues to prove successful for the Seasiders this season.

His second came from open play as a result of consistent pressure from the Weymouth press.

Drewitt intercepted a pass intended for Portsmouth’s left-back and his pass to the back post for May took a slight deflection off a defender to find the net.

Weymouth showed no signs of tiring and their relentless pressure continued.

Christopher Fry notched the fourth when also trying to pick out May. This time the Portsmouth keeper intercepted but fortunately for Fry the rebound hit his stick and he was given a simple tap in.

Much of the play was now in the visitors’ half and, although the Weymouth back line were allowed to camp high up the pitch, space was limited as the hosts looked to score again.

But the goals kept coming and the fifth arrived courtesy of some brilliant individual play from Matt Lawes.

With his first touch following a rolling substitution, Lawes took possession just inside the opposition half, jinked past a number of defenders and scored with a hard and accurate strike.

Weymouth keeper David Civil finally saw his first action of the game with a save from a penalty corner.

Unfortunately, the ball rebounded into a defender’s body and another penalty corner was awarded, and from that the visitors netted their only goal of the game.

Some sloppy tackling led to a temporary suspension for the Portsmouth captain and during this period the Seasiders scored their final goal.

Not content to allow his brother too much of an advantage in the top scorer stakes, Sam Drewitt turned over possession and executed a reverse hit to beat the goalkeeper. Fry was sin-binned for a late tackle with seconds remaining but with the damage done he could retire without too much concern.

As a result of their win, Weymouth moved up to fourth in the table, their highest position this season.

They now travel to second-placed Haslemere today and then host leaders Andover next weekend.

To make matters worse, the team is likely to field an inexperienced side due to the unavailability of a number of regular players.
