WESSEX Golf Centre’s Michael Watson has been named the PGA captain’s player of the year in England and Wales (South West) for 2014.

The Weymouth star claimed his first order of merit crown in more than 20 years and was also the region’s leading money-winner last year.

Watson won the Dudsbury Masters and Forest Classic, and was runner-up at the Marston’s PGA West Region Championship – he also clinched 10 Pro-Am wins.

In probably his finest year to date he made an incredible 262 birdies and 12 eagles, while 36 of his 57 tournament rounds were in the 60s with a stroke average of 69.9.

The award was given to Watson by regional captain Andrew March during the South West’s annual meeting at Woodbury Park in Devon.

Watson starts the defence of his order of merit title at the first of four ranking events in the seventh Total Triumph Classic at Oake Manor in Somerset on May 13-14.
