BAILY Cargill had the honour of captaining Bournemouth against Birmingham on Saturday – and Dorchester’s Charlie Davis was as happy as anyone for the young defender.

Magpies’ midfielder Davis and England Under-20 international Cargill have been good friends since their days together in the Cherries’ youth set-up.

Davis couldn’t make it to St Andrew’s to see Cargill lead Eddie Howe’s men to an FA Cup third round victory, but he did help the Bournemouth left-back celebrate the triumph later in the evening.

“I know Baily from our days at Bournemouth and we are quite close friends,” said Davis of his fellow 20-year-old.

“He came to Dorchester with a few of the Bournemouth lads during pre-season to watch us play.

When you are a Premier League footballer you have a lot going on but he has been very supportive.

“He had a crazy year in 2015, getting a new contract and scoring on his debut for the under-20s, and then he was called into the England Under-21 squad as well.

“Eddie Howe has given him a chance in the cup games and he captained the team at Birmingham.

It’s very pleasing to see him doing so well, and it’s good that a couple of other youngsters have been getting starts too.”

As for Davis, he is now getting ready for Dorchester’s clash away to Kettering tomorrow (7.45pm).

The Magpies head to Northamptonshire one point and one place behind the Poppies in the Evo- Stik Southern Premier Division.

Commenting on the league season to date, Davis added: “You look at the table and we are 11th, which isn’t really where we want to be, but then we are two or three points from the play-offs.

“Poole are out in front at the moment but I still don’t think you can read too much into it at this stage of the season.”
