Premier Division 2B

WEYMOUTH LADIES 2

YEOVIL & SHERBORNE 6

IN THEIR final match of the season, Weymouth lost out to second-placed Yeovil & Sherborne.

However, the Seasiders did fare better than at the beginning of the season when the outcome was a heavy 9-0 defeat.

The visitors started strongly and took the lead after only five minutes.

The hosts tried to get back into the game but Yeovil & Sherborne were just too dominant and were leading 4-0 after 25 minutes.

Weymouth then created a great attack with Sophie Foot feeding the ball between two defenders for Emily Austin to run on to, control and shoot early, to beat the goalkeeper on the nearside.

However, the visitors soon replied to make it 5-1 at the interval.

After a stern team talk at half-time, Weymouth were determined to make it a better second period.

Unfortunately, within five minutes of the restart, Weymouth defender Jacqui Ridlar’s game was cut short after suffering an accidental hit to her brow from an opponent’s stick and ended up with six stitches at A&E resulting from her bravery and dogged determination on the pitch.

Weymouth seemed to get their act together after the injury time out and the midfield of Casey Foot, Anneka Rogers, Jo Brazier and Megan Taylor began to link play.

Casey Foot and Lynda Drewitt linked well on the left and Drewitt placed a through ball to Austin who beat the last defender.

She went around the goalkeeper and shot with the ball hitting a post and went in for Weymouth’s and Austin’s second goal of the match.

Weymouth were awarded half a dozen penalty corners but were unsuccessful at converting any.

Yeovil & Sherborne had the final say in the game scoring another to make the end score 6-2.

A club spokesman said: “We may have lost this one; however, it was a tremendous achievement this season for us to remain in Premier Division 2B after gaining promotion last season and are sure there is more to come.”

Player of the match: Megan Taylor.
