JAY Lelliott will miss tonight's 1500-metre freestyle national final after going down with illness just hours before the event.

After finishing fifth fastest in the heats yesterday, the swimmer tweeted that he was 'devastated' to be missing the race and what was his final chance of Olympic qualification.

He said: "Due to being unwell for the last 24 hours I regret to announce that I won't be competing in the 1500m freestyle final tonight.

"I am devastated about this but good luck to everyone else still competing."

The 21-year-old had swam well during the National Championships in Glasgow, picking up two bronze medals in the 400m freestyle and the 200m butterfly.

However in both events he did not meet the criteria needed to be in contention for a spot in Rio this summer.
