THE Weymouth Beach Volleyball League is off to an exciting start with a thrilling final between the longest-standing team on Weymouth Beach, writes Graeme Sawyer.

Stalwarts Dom Cosserrat and Rob Semmence took on a new combination of Ryan Stout and Sean Hendry.

The early exchanges were all very tight with points being scored alternately.

However, as the match wore on the talent of the new combination of Hendry and Stout began to shine through and they dominated the latter end of the match, winning 21-14.

This pair, who plan to play together throughout the season and enter a number of the British Grand Prix events, are already showing the signs that they are going to be the team to beat on Weymouth Beach this season.

Earlier in the evening, another new pairing of Stephen Williamson and Elliott Sawyer and a returning pair of Ian Denslow and Carl Neale had battled through to play in the semi-finals but both were beaten quite comfortably by the finalists.

The B Series saw a highly competitive final with Matt Palmer and Hayden Francis taking on Jason Tranter and Becks Johnson. After close early exchanges Palmer and Francis ran out winners 21-11.

In a new development for the league, Palmer and Francis will now earn promotion to the A Series for next week’s competition.

The competitions start again on Tuesday evening with all players needing to register on the beach by the permanent court before 6.30pm.

Because each week is a standalone event any new players are extremely welcome to join in.
