ENGLAND Veterans’ and Weymouth player Wendy Butcher was left slightly disappointed after her side came second in the Home Nations tournament in Edinburgh.

Butcher’s team was beaten by Ireland in the round-robin format where their only defeat came against the Irish.

They beat Wales 3-0 and then won 2-0 against the hosts, however they weren’t able to take home the crown.

Speaking about the competition, Butcher said: “It was a bit gutting because we went out there to win.

“We only lost 1-0 to Ireland in a tight game, but we had the better of the play.

“The rest of the tournament was brilliant. The rest of the age groups all won their respective tournaments so England nearly took a clean sweep, apart from us.

“So, that made it more difficult to take.

“But it was a great experience.”

Butcher will be back on the pitch this August as she prepares for a new season with Weymouth, a team she will be captaining this year.

The 44-year-old will also be stepping up an age group as of November and is hopeful she will be picked for more international tournaments.

She explained: “There is a European Championships next year and another Home Nations as well.

“I have two silver medals now and I really want some gold.”
