ALISON Young has vowed to try to end her Rio 2016 on a high by winning the final medal race after seeing her podium hopes ended yesterday.
Young scored her first race win of the regatta in the second race of the day, but having finished 16th in the race before, the points gap between herself in eighth and Ireland’s Annalise Murphy currently occupying third is too great for Young to claw back, even with Monday’s medal race worth double points for every position.
The 29-year-old, based on Portland, admits she has endured a frustrating Olympics. But she insists she will be doing everything she can to go out with a bang and claim a final victory.
Young said: “My aim is to go into the medal race, win the race and try and finish the regatta on a little bit of a high. It’s expected to be a tough race as the girls that are fighting for medals have sailed great so I’ve got to try to squeeze some good racing.
“It was nice to finish the opening series with a bullet, but the rest of the regatta has been very disappointing. I can take some positives but overall it’s just very disappointing.”
The Laser Radials will have a rest day today, with Young saying she will watch Nick Dempsey’s RS:X Medal Race in which he will win silver, before competing in Rio for the final time on Monday.
