MOONFLEET’S Ryan Nash represented England in the International Under-18 Mixed Series, which consisted of teams from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Channel Islands.

The 17-year-old from Weymouth was part of the England team and played in both the triples and fours as they retained the series trophy in Aberdeen.

Nash who played lead in the triples alongside Liam Harris (Beccles) and Adam Pitfield (Wellingborough) said: “It was a great experience, the atmosphere was amazing and the quality of bowls was outstanding.”

He and his team-mates came up against an experienced Welsh trio in the first game.

The English triple found themselves 5-4 down after their first set before going 6-3 down in the second leaving Wales with the first game points.

The English trio then faced a tough Irish side but managed to come out of the gates strongly winning the first set 10-2.

The Irish threesome came back though, winning the second 9-7 before England fought back to win the tie-break to give England the game.

The England trio then played an experienced Scotland team in the final game of the day.

Scotland got the upper hand in the first set winning 9-4.

The English trio then fought back winning the second 7-6 before clinching victory in the tie-break to hand England the much-needed points to be in contention for another series win.

Day two of the series went much the same way for Nash with the addition of Ruby Hill (Spalding) in the fours.

Where they came up against Scotland again this time they tied the first set 5-5 before Scotland clinched the winning second set 6-4. England again played Ireland in the second game winning 5-3 and then 9-1 to secure victory.

The four then faced a second Scottish team in the last game of the day where England again came out strongly going up 6-3 in the first set before putting down an outstanding performance to win the second 8-3, to secure the points to help England win and retain the series.

Nash began as a member of the junior section of Moonfleet 2000 Indoor Bowls Club in Knightsdale Road, Weymouth.

The club meet each week from 10-12 on Saturday mornings and welcome anyone aged between 10 and 18 who would like to try their hand at this sport.
