WEYMOUTH 2

SOUTHAMPTON UNI 2

CAPTAIN Steven Membury was Weymouth’s hero after he struck an equaliser to deny the students of Southampton.

The Seasiders had been struggling to name a full team for a few weeks due to injuries, other personal commitments and holidays.

Simon Harvey missed out after receiving a red card in last week’s defeat to Yateley.

Halfway through the first half, the hosts took the lead when Aaron Wilkinson found Membury from the 25-yard line.

He dribbled past two players then fired the ball to Ben Heckford who slotted home his first goal for the senior team.

Weymouth managed to hold the lead for about 10 minutes, before Southampton won a short corner, shortly before the end of the first half. The short corner routine was textbook, a quick push out to the top of the D then a slip to the left with that player slapping it home in the bottom left corner.

Southampton dominated late on in the first half, firing plenty of shots at David Civil in the home goal, but the keeper was on form making three consecutive saves.

Roly Gill stepped up and played a great game at right wing-back making some fine tackles.

The second half started again very evenly, but Southampton took the lead early on with a visiting player rounded Civil for a tap-in.

Weymouth managed to keep their heads together and, within 10 minutes, Wilkinson won a short corner for the Seasiders.

With the pitch being so dry and slow, Teddy Andrews hit the ball out to the top of the D with a solid stop from Michael Westlake.

Membury controlled the ball and took it past two defenders with some great skill and pushed it into the bottom corner.

Dan Bowles, despite playing with an injury, had another great game making some fine passes.

The hosts then went looking for a winner. Late on, left-winger Flo Ziegenbalg, took the ball past two players with his pace and dribbled it into the D and won Weymouth a short corner.

Weymouth crowded the D for the short corner, with another great hit from Andrews and a crucial stop from Westlake.

Membury slipped it left to Bowles who put a fantastic ball to the back post for Ziegenbalg, but, the foreign international could not keep his stick on the floor for the easy tap-in.

Weymouth travel to City of Portsmouth this Saturday, for their final league game of the season.
