SOFIA Gonzalez, playing with Becky O’Neill, narrowly lost 21-14 to Mark Lee and Paul Fitzgerald in this week’s B Series Final in the Weymouth ‘Go Spike’ League, but it was enough to take her to the top of the B rankings for this season.
This is the first time that a female player has led the B Standings in the history of this mixed competition.
This situation reflects the rapidly improving standard of the women players in Weymouth and with other female players such as O’Neill, Lauren Edwards and Chloe and Lucy Oldrid rapidly improving, Gonzalez will have to work hard to maintain her position as number one woman player on Weymouth Beach.
In the A Series, it was ‘King Of The Beach’ week.
This is when the top eight ranked players compete as individuals, partnering a different partner each match.
The winner is the player who scores most points at the end of the evening. This month’s competition was won by Ryan Stout, who ended up ahead of his closest rivals Craig Bishop, Carl Neale and Terry Oldrid.
n The league continues on Tuesday and all new players are welcome from 6pm at the permanent courts, or they can join the coaching sessions between 6-8pm on Wednesday evening.
