WELLWORTHY will represent Dorset in the Bowls England National Championship.

The last two weekends have seen Wellworthy, based in Wyke Regis win the County Men’s Fours and Men’s Triples to now go forward and represent the county in the championships at Leamington Spa in August.

Wellworthy men’s four, Maurice Haylock, Colin Slade, Graham Parker and Ryan Stone defeated a Shaftesbury Four 28-7 in the quarter-finals held in the morning at Weymouth & Melcombe Regis.

It was level pegging for the first few ends until the Wellworthy Four won a decisive eight-pointer in one end from which they never looked back.

Shaftesbury threw in the towel after 19 ends when it became mathematically impossible for them to recover.

Wellworthy’s four then went on to play another 21-end match in the afternoon to defeat Lyme Regis 24-11 in the semi-finals, with Lyme conceding after 18 ends.

Not content to represent Dorset in the men’s four, Haylock, Parker and Stone went on to Lyme Regis to win out in the triples as well.

First they had to beat another Wellworthy trio who had also got to the quarter-finals 18-9 and then went on to punish Blandford Forum 18-3 in the afternoon’s semi-finals.

So while the three will represent Dorset in the National Championship in the men’s triples this August, Slade will join them to represent Dorset in the men’s fours.

At the same time as Wellworthy’s elite players were triumphing at county level, the club was also holding two open days for new people to try their hand at the sport.

n Anyone wanting to develop their skills in the game is welcome to join the club today for a short coaching session (from 10.30am to midday). Just go along at or before 10.30am.
