WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club get their indoor season off and running in the South West League this coming Sunday.

Weymouth, sponsored by Aura Nightclub, have only formed this year having had a 20-year exodus from national competition. Despite their inexperience as a collective, there is plenty of experience within the ranks and the team have set their sights on winning promotion in their first year.

Weymouth have played only one game so far, losing out in the National Cup to a Southampton side who play

four divisions above them.

Despite the loss, the team took many positives from the game particularly after taking one set and are keen to see how they fare against opposition from lower down the national league structure.

Due to the large geographical nature of the division, games are played in a triangular format whereby three teams play against each other at each fixture.

The first triangular fixture sees Weymouth hosting Cardiff and the Beach Academy (Croyde).

Player coach Ryan Stout said: "This is the first home league game for 20 years and it really is a momentous occasion.

"Given its our first league game we don’t quite know what to expect but equally the away sides will have no idea of the strength contained within our side.

"The team have worked really hard in training and have come on leaps and bounds since we first came together in August. "We are hoping we can put Weymouth volleyball back on the national map and that our fixtures become a big local sporting event. Therefore, we want to see as many supporters as possible.”

The first set of games, sponsored by Stressless Massage, kicks off at 11.30am at Redlands Sports Centre with Weymouth versus Cardiff.

This will be followed by a game between the visiting teams before Weymouth play Beach Academy.

All are welcome to cheer on Weymouth as they try to make their mark in their debut season.
