SALISBURY II 24 WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 7

WEYMOUTH & Portland skipper Kevin Leatham felt complacency was his side’s undoing in their defeat to Salisbury Seconds.

The visitors were brought down to earth by the Wiltshire outfit following three successive victories going into the Dorset & Wilts Two South game.

All the away team could muster in terms of points was Joe Gibson’s consolation try which Bryn Llewellyn converted.

By the time centre Gibson had touched down the hosts had already crossed the Weymouth & Portland whitewash on three occasions.

“It was not a good weekend for us,” said Leatham. “A bit of complacency crept in which was disappointing really.

“I think we got there and thought we were going to win without doing the work that was needed.

“They came at us quite hard and it was only after they had scored three tries did we wake up a bit, but it was too late by then.”

Going into more detail about his side’s shortcomings, he added: “Our defence was too narrow and that’s something we’ll have to look at in training.

“We had a couple of guys playing out of position in the backs which didn’t help when Salisbury moved the ball out wide.”

Gibson’s try did please Leatham, particularly the way his men stayed patient in possession before shifting the ball to the inside centre who finished off a well-worked move.

The performances of scrum-half Gordon Tye and full-back Steve Nation-Granger also imp-ressed the captain.

Leatham’s charges do not play again until a week Saturday when they host second-placed Swanage & Wareham Seconds at Mon-mouth Avenue.

East Dorset, comfortable winners over Dorchester Seconds at the weekend, lead the standings with three teams – the Swans, Weymouth & Portland and Salisbury – all on 25 points.
