WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 44 WHEATSHEAF CABIN CREW 5

JOEL Wilson turned in another virtuoso display for Weymouth & Portland but was one of three home players to suffer injuries which ended their afternoons prematurely.

Wilson scored four of the hosts’ eight tries in their 44-5 defeat of Wheatsheaf Cabin Crew in Dorset & Wilts Two South on Saturday before leaving the field with a nasty cut to his tongue.

Having moved from the wing to fly-half and scored a try of his own, Simon Dean suffered a dislocated shoulder – the same injury that saw him take a three-year break from the sport.

Hooker James Borrington also added to coach Paul Harding’s worries by sustaining what could be a pulled calf muscle.

The visitors arrived at Monmouth Avenue with only 13 men but still elected to play the game as a league fixture rather than forfeiting.

There was never any doubt about which team was going to win as Wilson crossed at will and Weymouth & Portland comfortably clinched a bonus point.

However, Harding admitted it was a “funny sort of game”, with the Crew playing well above themselves two players light.

“The conditions weren’t too bad but we struggled to get any momentum,” said Harding.

“It was very stop-start, we struggled again in the scrums, and we picked up more injuries.

“But you have to give credit to our opponents, they played superbly with 13 men.”

Commenting on Wilson’s performance, he added: “Joel was magnificent and every time he got the ball it looked like he was gong to score.”

Weymouth & Portland stay second in the league table, two points behind Yeovil, who thrashed Fordingbridge Seconds 63-0.
