WHILE promotion from Dorset & Wilts Two South remains Weymouth & Portland’s main aim this term, club president Des Quick is more than happy to see the club’s youngsters flourish along the way.

Saturday’s 38-24 victory at Bournemouth Thirds saw a number of teenagers that have come up through the age groups at Monmouth Avenue blooded in the side, including James Davis on his inaugural full game for the first team.

And while Quick would rather the side be a level up from their current position, he is fully aware that the first-team’s current division provides a good platform to develop their young talents. He told Echosport: “It’s an ideal opportunity where we can blood them in without them being under too much pressure.

“We have a conveyor belt of players going now and it’s starting to reap rewards.

“Our second team are lying top of Division Four and, hopefully, both teams will go up one which is where we should be really.

“Going back up into Southern Counties is such a big step.”

Commenting on Davis, Quick added: “It was James’ first full game. He played at fly-half and he acquitted himself very well.

“He had around 10 minutes off the bench the week before but he did really well. I think we had four 17-year-olds in the team. They have come through the youth section and that is boding very well.”
