WHEATSHEAF CABIN CREW 24

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 31

WEYMOUTH & Portland’s Kevin Leatham helped his side secure a positive result on his return to playing action at Wheatsheaf Cabin Crew.

The club captain made his comeback from the broken hand he sustained against Ellingham & Ringwood at the start of February, and got through the full 80 minutes on his return to the seaside club’s starting XV.

Giving his thoughts on the tightly-contested Dorset & Wilts Two South encounter, Leatham told

Echosport: “I was a bit rusty but it was good to be back playing again.

“We had quite a few changes in the team to start off with but the guys coming in were good players.

“It took us a while to get going but, once we did, we were in the ascendancy at the end of the first half.

“I thought we were going to run away with it but they came back strongly and we had quite a battle on our hands.”

Joel Wilson was once again among the tries and scooped he man of the match award for the away side.

“If he gets in space and you give him the ball he is gone,” said Leatham about his side’s star centre.

“He’s a massive asset to the team.”

But, with Leatham returning, ironically Weymouth & Portland suffered two more hand injuries on the day to Joe Gibson and Chris Hurrell, who only realised he had suffered a break the next day. Johnny Young also picked up a shoulder injury and Will Quick twisted his ankle.

The win gives third-placed Weymouth & Portland their 16th win from 19 league games played so far this term.

With leaders Yeovil running away with the title, the Monmouth Avenue outfit have the perfect chance to leapfrog Bournemouth Thirds into second spot when they do battle on Saturday, April 2.
