HAROLD Doonan has insisted his consortium has done everything it can to try and save the Weymouth Wildcats from extinction.

The deadline for entry into the National League passes on Monday and the group still has not heard back from landlords Wessex Delivery Partnership about leasing the Wessex Raceway.

Doonan told Echosport: “It is not down to us anymore as we have done everything we can. It is down to the non-co-operative landlords who don’t appear to want to speak to us.

“The money is still in place and everything is ready to make it a non-profit making business but the deadline for entry to the league is on Monday and we are running out of time.

“I have no confirmation on this whatsoever but I reckon there would still be a chance of getting the BSPA to let us slip under the wire in mid-February if we could get it sorted by then. But until the landlords get back to us there is nothing we can do.”

Doonan went on to add: “We are still in there fighting and still interested.

“It took 19 years for speedway to return to Weymouth and my worry is it will be dead forever and a day if it doesn’t run this year.

“It would mean the end of another amenity in the town, which attracts many visitors to the area, and that is why the people of Weymouth need to help try and keep it going.”

Ringwood Raceway supremo Craig Robinson also remains interested in the Wildcats but at present is refusing to comment on the situation.
