BIGGLESWADE TOWN 2

THE Terras were left frustrated at the Carlsberg Stadium after a late rally came to nothing against lowly Biggleswade Town.

With the Waders lying in 19th place ahead of kick-off with just one win from nine games, many expected Weymouth to dominate in Bedfordshire, but it was not until the hosts had a man sent off midway through the second half that they ever really got on top.

A sloppy first-half performance handed the hosts a 2-0 lead and although Scott Walker pulled one back from the penalty spot, Biggleswade managed to hang on.

Visiting boss Brendon King chose to keep faith with the same starting XI that began the FA Cup replay victory at Bognor Regis Town last midweek.

Ben Joyce continued alongside Danny Clay in central midfield while Mark Ford partnered Stewart Yetton up front.

A couple of changes on the bench saw Matt Cafer replace Jordan Tewkesbury while Jamie Symes dropped out to gain some minutes with the reserves.

Winless in five in the league, Biggleswade were clearly desperate to get off to a flying start and, thanks to new signing Nat Peacock, they did exactly that.

The lively forward, who bagged a hat-trick against the Terras back in April while playing for Bedford Town, took just 13 minutes to grab his debut goal.

Brett Donnelly provided the ammunition with a cross from the left and there was Peacock to stroke the ball home, giving visiting stopper Jason Matthews absolutely no chance.

Prior to that Luke Burbidge had threatened on a couple of occasions for the Terras but the hosts were soaking up pressure well and breaking at every opportunity.

Donnelly and Craig Daniel both saw efforts fly off target for the Waders before Ford could only head the ball into the hands of Ian Brown at the other end, following more good work from Burbidge.

The Terras were certainly enjoying a lot of possession but they were struggling to carve out openings.

Their best chance of the half came on 41 minutes when the persistence of Yetton gave Ford another sight of goal, only for his effort to be blocked by Brown.

The visitors were clearly becoming frustrated and just a minute before the break they conceded again when Lee Reed pounced on a poor clearance, rode a couple of challenges and beat Matthews from 10 yards.

Lethargy in the first half had clearly cost the Terras dear and it was no surprise to see them fly out of the blocks after the interval in a bid to make amends.

Yetton saw an effort saved and Ford sent a header wide but the Waders were still looking well organised, and after Callum Lewis had gone close from the edge of the box Matthews was forced into a couple of fine saves.

The best of them came on 52 minutes when he somehow kept out a header from Donnelly after more great play from Reed.

The Weymouth number one also denied Daniel with a more routine save before Lewis put the ball into the net, only to see his effort disallowed for offside.

At the other end, the visitors were still looking short of ideas until Max York took out Ford in the box with 15 minutes remaining.

The home defender saw red and Scott Walker dispatched the spot-kick to finally give his side some hope.

Nathan Walker was then pushed up front as the Terras looked to lay siege on the Biggleswade box in the closing stages, but the equaliser they were after never arrived.

The best chance for a late leveller did fall to Nathan Walker in the first minute of added time but his header from Sam Poole’s cross was tipped over the bar.
