HISTON 1 WEYMOUTH 4

WEYMOUTH got back to form with a bang as they hit struggling Histon for four at the Glass World Stadium.

A George Rigg brace along with strikes from Ben Thomson and Chris Shephard ensured the Terras put an end to a run of four league games without a win and recorded a league double over the struggling Stutes.

After resting himself for the midweek Red Insure Cup reverse against Paulton Rovers, Terras’ player-manager Jason Matthews brought himself straight back into the Weymouth starting XI.

He was joined by the returning Pat Baldwin, Dean Evans and Chris Shephard.

Ashley Wells kept his place in the side at right-back after an impressive showing against Rovers, meaning Mark Cooper was left to settle for a spot on the bench. Ben Thomson remained preferred to club captain Stewart Yetton up front.

Youthful Histon were without the injured quartet of Evan Key, Jack Uttridge, Sam Ives and Lewis Clayton, but Danny Gould kept his place in the side after a strong senior debut for the club in midweek.

Youth team scholars Aysa Ourtilbour and Alex Clark were named on the bench.

The last time the two sides locked horns was back in September when a late own goal from Elkanah Sibanda proved the difference, as Weymouth secured a 1-0 win.

Matthews admitted his side needed to respond following two poor home defeats against Hitchin and Paulton and he got a reaction early against the Stutes, with what was virtually the opening chance of the contest.

With just two minutes on the clock, George Rigg bundled the ball home to put the Terras ahead.

Weymouth player-manager Matthews was then called into action on six minutes to scramble away a dangerous delivery from Histon’s Ryan Auger and, soon after, he came out confidently to claim a devilish ball from Danny Gould.

Gould continued to cause problems down the left for the home side but, a goal to the good, the Terras stood firm.

Weymouth had to hack the ball off the line after Josh Oyinsan headed a cross goalwards. That came after a stunning block from Dan Gleeson denied the visitors the chance to double their lead.

Matthews then pulled off a top-drawer save to deny Stutes’ Matty Allen just short of the break as his side went in ahead at half-time.

On 60 minutes, the Terras’ then created breathing room as Thomson capped off a slick breakaway move.

He stabbed home from close range after Shephard’s shot was initially saved by Denzel Gerrar in the hosts’ goal.

The Terras then moved up a gear.

Rigg applied a superb finish on the turn to bag his second of the game and Shephard tucked home a fourth soon after as the away team wrapped up the three points.

Oyinsan did manage to find a consolation for the home side late on but it was not to take the gloss of what was a solid afternoon’s work for Matthews’ men.
