Underfire King hails nine men

FORD STRIKES: Mark Ford FORD STRIKES: Mark Ford

UNDER-FIRE boss Brendon King put a positive spin on Saturday’s debacle against Stourbridge by praising his team for not giving up after being reduced to nine men.

Sam Poole and Kyle Critchell both saw red for the Terras either side of half-time in the 5-1 defeat which was littered with ill-discipline and calamitous errors.

However, King surprisingly refused to condemn his players afterwards and instead chose to praise the majority of them for their whole-hearted commitment, which is unlikely to go down well with many of his critics.

He told Echosport: “Everything we worked on in the days leading up to the game came off in the opening 40 minutes.

“We limited them to very few chances and we looked a totally different side to the one that lost the previous week in the Trophy.

“We then conceded a poor goal, which was down to a bit of miscommunication between Scott Walker and Stephen Reed, but then res-ponded with an equaliser from Mark Ford and at that stage we were well in the game.

“However, not for the first time this season, we then switched off from the restart and some good passing and movement by them led to Sam getting sent off for bringing down one of their lads in the box.

“It was a naive challenge and those are the things he needs to learn from because at 2-1 down with 10 men, we suddenly had a mountain to climb.

“We told the lads at the break that no matter what happens we wanted them to roll their sleeves up and have a good go, and I felt they did that.

“We started the second half well and even after Kyle got dismissed we never stopped chasing.

“It was always going to be tough in the later stages but the work-rate never dropped and although I am extremely disappointed with the result, I was proud of the way we kept going to the end.”

Critchell’s departure proved the main talking point after the final whistle and King was keen to give his view.

He added: “Luke Benbow had already been booked when he caught Kyle with an elbow. The lads felt it was a dangerous challenge but the referee said he did not see an arm raised.

“Kyle then came off for treatment only for the officials to wave him back on in an active area, which was completely wrong.

“Still a bit dazed and pumped up by what had just happened to him, Kyle then went in and took the ball only to collide with one of their lads.

“He caught him on the shinpad and because of that noise and their players’ protests the referee decided to send him off.

“I think it looked a lot worse than what it was and on another day he might have got away with a booking.

“We also felt we could have had a penalty. Ben Joyce is convinced his leg was clipped in the second half but it wasn’t given.”

The defeat leaves Weymouth in 13th spot in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, just five points above the drop-zone having played more games than most.

*Weymouth Reserves’ game at Swanage Town & Herston in the Magna Dorset Premier League was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

I didn’t thing things could get worse, but Saturdays performance was a new low. Over 600 people turned up to see a poor team perform so badly; the club risks losing support if the situation isn’t remedied.

In comparison Stourbridge were a class act. We were out thought, out fort, out gunned and out run by a team that clearly, unlike Weymouth, wanted to win.

This can’t go on much longer. Come on Nigel time is running out. The manager is not up to the job, and a number of players need to be replaced.

I now regret buying a season ticket. One thing for sure I will not buy one next season if Brendon King is still there, or if we get relegated.

This game is perfectly summed up by Bk. for 35 mins, despite being slightly outclassed , the team were solid and compact and looking comfortable. Instead of looking at the game when it was reduced to 11 v 9 , look at what happened before that. If you can't see the positives from that , I suggest your knowledge on football is lacking.

I'm far from Brendon's biggest fan but the fact of the matter is that he's the manager and the board gave him their public backing.
So we can sit here and complain all we like but it wont change anything. Time the fans man up a bit and actually got behind the team. The amount of abuse the team and managment get from a section of the support is out of order so I wouldnt be surprised if some of those players are not enjoying playing for the club.

Time to really get behind the team. Anyone can do that when the teams winning but it takes rwal supporters to do it when things aren't going so well. And no I'm not saying that people who dont sing are not real supporters - but where does hurling abuse get us? nowhere.

Nobody said this would be easy

It is about time that Brendon King and the players started performing so that the team have a realistic chance of making the play-offs! Anyone who thinks I am being too hard, needs to look at the wider context? Dorchester our rivals up the road play one league above us with lower gates and are now in the Second Round of the FA Cup! Congratulations to Dorchester for the superb performance and making sure there are two Dorset teams in the FA Cup. Unfortunately our only dream of cup success is the Dorset Senior Cup! Come on Nigel we need a new manager to give us even a chance of making the play-offs!

The Terras have no chance of making the play offs as the players are not good enough . Mid table will be a decent achievement this year.

It seem that fair criticism, as expressed from my point of view, is being interpreted by some of the contributors to this blog as abuse.

Nothing I have written is abusive in any way shape or form, unlike “imthere”.

To Imthere and 212 Dorset.

All I will say is that you don’t have to be a chef to recognise a bad meal.

I have used this forum ever since the disaster of last season, when the club escaped relegation by the skin of its teeth. I predicted that we would be in a relegation dog fight again this season. Actually I hope I’m wrong but I’ very pessimistic.

As for the season ticket – no change – no ticket next year

At least we've established in a round a bout way that you have no formal qualifications, in relation to football at any level. Please confirm what you classify as "rubbish", in relation to what is on offer from WFC. I personally feel it would do no harm for the Terras to get relegated and start again from a lower level, and work there way back up in a proportionate and sensible manner. Unfortunately, having watched on Saturday, it is clear that The Terras will easily finish mid table, and avoid releagtion.

Last week a chairmans forum was held with an open invite for any one to attend and ask any questions
Not one person did !!!
Iam answering out of line here
But we are determined to taking this club forward in a professional manner
And we are not involved in a race to do it we are slowly restoring pride in our club.
That pride is not only in how we deal with financial matters but in how we treat all persons involved in the club.
And knee jerk reactions are not part of how we will reach our target.
All board members are at all games if you have a view please talk to us and in return to us listening to your view we can then allow you to listen to ours and hopefully we can all move this club forward.

Shaun if you employed a stylist who continually and constantly under performed, lost you customers and many of those who stayed regularly complained would you 'stand by' that employee at the expense of your business, reputation and future? Let me answer it for you, NO. Then why stand by a manager who is clearly out of his depth and doing everything to WFC I have described above? It's a straight and honest question Shaun so please answer honestly.
