ADAM Kelly provided a spark off the bench in the Terras’ 3-1 win over Cray Wanderers on Saturday, but he insists he does not want to do it as a replacement every week.

The midfielder, who is chomping at the bit to get back into Jason Matthews’ starting XI, understands the Terras’ squad will need to be rotated to deal with a tough Christmas schedule, but believes he has proved his worth for Weymouth all season long to remain in the starting XI.

With Vanarama South outfit Havant & Waterlooville poised to visit the Bob Lucas Stadium in the first round proper on Saturday, December 13, winger Kelly is determined to keep up with the competition for places, something he believes is vital in gaining success.

“I was frustrated that I was on the bench,” he told Echosport “But I have a winning mentality and I remember speaking at the start of the season saying that if we want to be up there to win the title we have got to have a decent squad and competition for places has got to be fierce.

“Jason wants to look over at the bench and see he has options to change games, I think we had that on Saturday.”

And in providing a much-needed impetus as a substitute, the former Tiverton Town man admitted he wanted to react to being rotated in a positive manner.

He added: “No one likes being left out. It’s good to be disappointed and show you are disappointed because it shows that you care and you want to be playing.

“I think I deserve to be playing with the form I’ve been in, but you have to react in the right way and be positive to come on and make an impact. I think I did that in winning the penalty.

“If you’re sat there and you’re not too bothered about being on the bench and you go on and don’t make much of an impact, it shows it doesn’t matter to you as much as it should.”

Kelly is set to take his place in the side to take on Dorset Premier League title-chasers Hamworthy Recreation at home tonight (7.45pm) along with a number of Weymouth first-team players who could play a part in the Dorset Senior Cup quarter-final.

Reacting to his team’s draw for the next round of the Trophy against the Hawks, boss Matthews said: “I’m really chuffed to have a home draw.

“It’s something that hopefully the fans will be up for and hopefully they will come out and get behind us.

“It gives us a very good test because we want to be in Havant’s position next year.”
