MANAGER Jason Matthews insists his squad will not be getting too carried away, even though no team in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division will go into the New Year with more points than the Terras.

Weymouth’s 3-0 victory over Arlesey Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday saw them move level with leaders Poole Town and Corby Town at the summit, with a game in hand on their Dorset rivals.

But knowing there is more than half of the campaign still to play, the Weymouth player-manager insisted his side remained grounded.

“I think we just need to keep taking one game at a time, we aren’t getting too excited,” he told Echosport.

“I have a great bunch of lads and they are all very level-headed, we keep their feet on the ground.
“There is a good buzz in the changing room but it’s the right type of buzz, nobody is getting cocky because I won’t have it in my team.

“Having 50 points from 20 games is an unbelievable achievement with a lesser budget than last year.”

Commenting on the performance against struggling Arlesey, Matthews added: “I felt we played some fantastic stuff at times and having two wingers like Shep (Chris Shephard) and (Alec) Fiddes, I think their full-backs will have slept well last night.”

With Sam Poole breaking his nose during the encounter, Weymouth’s search for a central-defender intensifies, and Matthews is hopeful of adding to his squad before they face Truro City on New Year’s Day.

“Sam has broken his nose quite badly,” he added.

“I must admit I do feel for him, he is a massive part of the squad, he was captain last year and I still hold him in high regard.

“I have seven days in for a player at the moment, we will learn more this week but hopefully that is good news. I am also looking to go into the loan market as well.”
